[VIDEO] Allosaurus - Jurassic Park Chaos Theory 2/4

The second stop motion animation in the Jurassic Park: Chaos Theory series. Produced, as usual, for The LEGO Group, Universal Pictures and Dreamworks. It has 1.8 million solo views on the LEGO YouTube channel and was also part of a compilation with 1.3 million views. The main theme here is LEGO set 76966 Dinosaur Missions: Allosaurus Transport Truck.

As usual, I suggest to watch the animation first, and then read the rest of the article below. Although this time it will be very short.

As usual my task was to create a story around that specific set.

I struggled most with the flying drone because... it had to fly. I managed it without any green screens. The drone is actually there. That's why it looks realistic, not artificially pasted. This required a lot post-production - removing the supports which keep the drone in the air.

For fun I also added scenes with a deer. For those who are observant - you can spot it much earlier than in the scene with the drone putting it to sleep... :)

It's worth noting that there are a lot of demanding, dynamic action scenes here, where the camera follows vehicles or tracks the drone from a bird's eye view. It was quite fun to shoot, but it required really specific planning of when things were going to happen. And the terrain must have been really huge because the vehicles cover quite a distance in a very short time. The longest shot was running across eight baseplates surrounded by forest on all sides!

🎬 Previous videos with the dinosaurs you can find here.

The truck crash and the quad jump at the end of the film also involve a lot of additional supports that aren't visible in the final cut. They were removed digitally. Overall, this animation required the most hours spent on the computer of all my "dinosaur" animations. But you probably can't see that at all. Which is a good sign :) Because these are the best "invisible" special effects. :)

Someday I'll finally get around to making a whole series of "behind the scenes" videos and show you exactly what it all looks like from the production side. For now I got those 2 photos:
